Winter Appeal

We are aiming to raise £100,000 between November and February, which will help us to pay for food stocks over the winter period as well as helping us provide an extra bag of treats at Christmas.

Each bag of food that we give costs around £12 and for a family bag the average is £15. On top of that we provide fresh fruit and vegetables, and a choice of items such as cooking oil, coffee or tea, sugar, as well as toiletries, nappies and sanitary items.

Currently we are serving around 750-800 foodbank visitors every week.

You can donate either through our website, on our Patchwork page or through our Local Giving Appeal.

Last year, our Emergency Appeal raised an incredible £240,000, which helped the foodbank to survive throughout the height of the pandemic, winter and beyond. We are so grateful to everyone who supported us.

Item of December

The Bow Food Bank continues to need our support. The items for November are:

Pasta and Rice

We will collect them and take them to the Food Bank at the end of the month.

Emergency Food Aid Appeal 2020

Our Christmas Appeal is different this year – we are fighting to stay open into the new year, fighting to keep up with increased client numbers and fighting to stay ahead of more lockdowns and Brexit effects. We currently pre-pack food items per person, and offer a small choice of extra hygiene/ cleaning products and some fresh fruit & veg. For children, there are a couple of items – not nearly enough for a whole week, just a top up for a few days when there is nothing else left in the cupboard.

This Christmas, we will still give some chocolates & treats, but probably a smaller offer. Please help us secure a vital community food aid service for people in Bow and Bethnal Green ready for 2021.

About the Fundraising Emergency Appeal 2020

Since the Bow and Bethnal Green Foodbanks are now providing food parcels to around 800 adults and 1500 children per week, we are running low on funds, and have about 10 weeks left at current levels. So, this is a call to arms, and we need you, as people who know so well what we do, to spread the word.
Our target is to raise £240,000 over the next 4 months as a combination of money and food donations. Obviously we always want food donations, and have done well to streamline the range of products we get in, but the pre-packing of food bags each week requires bulk purchase of our core 10 items. So we need a lot of money. The funding streams we will focus on are:

  • Trusts & Foundations
  • Corporates / Businesses
  • Gov / Local Authority
  • Individuals – monthly giving (via Virgin Money Giving )
  • Individuals – one offs
  • Community fundraising
  • High Net Worth Individuals

Please have a think about what fundraising you could be part of:

Does your employer have an annual favourite charity?
Do they offer match funding if you fundraise yourself?
Could you help write bids and grant applications?
Are you connected to other clubs, groups or community organisations that would support us?
Do you happen to know a millionaire?

We will use the weekly call to discuss the approach in each work stream and identify lead volunteers for each area. So you have some time to think about your time commitment, your networks & useful contacts, and what you might be able to do to help us reach this target.
Thanks everyone.

Fr Javier

Who we are

We are an independent foodbank charity that has served the local community since 2014.  We are open to those in need of food support without referral.

Currently, during the continued COVID crisis, we are offering pre-bagged items + fresh fruit and veg once a week, with some extra food for families with children.

Due to the staggering increase in client numbers in 2020, we are currently urgently fundraising £240,000 to cover our food purchase costs for the early part of next year – without which, we may need to close. We need your help to contact funding bodies, trusts, foundations, corporates and community organisations who give charitable funds for food purchases. Until March 2021 we have funding from the Big Lottery Fund to cover our non-food expenses, but we find it harder to get grant funds that allow food purchases. If you have some time and skills that could help us, please join our Fundraising Team (a Whatsapp group and regular Zoom call). And of course, please donate here.

The Bow Foodbank is a registered charity, (charity number 1162185) operating at two locations below.  The Trustees, drawn from the local community, meet regularly and take an active role in the running of the foodbank.  For list of current trustees, click here: Trustees
