5th July 2020 – 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

WELCOME BACK!

The last time we met for a public Mass was 15th March. Much has happened since but now we are back in our parish building. During this time, I have kept in touch with some of you, but my list of contact was greatly impaired due to GDPR. Perhaps, creating a census of the parish might be a task for the months ahead.

During this time, we have learnt to pray and celebrate our faith in different ways. Some of you have shared your stories with me and there are pictures of your celebrations around Easter in our parish webpage. Some of you have followed us on YouTube. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have kept quite busy. The Bow Food Bank has grown and risen to the challenge of the present crisis. Due to Health and Safety reasons we moved from St Mary’s to our Parish Hall. Then we moved yet again to the Bromley-by-Bow Centre in Bruce Rd, from where we currently run the Monday session (8.30am – 12.30pm) and prepare for home deliveries. I was halfway through the term at the Seminary and I had to learn how to teach online. Being not very technically able, this process took some time but I manage to deliver some of the lectures. I am still running a seminar. Robert is in good spirits and next year he should go to a parish for a full time pastoral placement. The parish is still to be decided. Just before lockdown, a friend of mine and governor at St Agnes, John Hayward, moved into the presbytery. So I have had some sort of routine and someone to pray with, celebrate Mass with and have meals (and an occasional drink with…). This, I believe, have helped me keep whatever sanity I had left.

I’d like also to thank Sebastian Brzegowy on your behalf. He has supported the parish IT-wise and thanks to him we have been able to broadcast every week. My thanks also to Ania Keech who manages our webpage.

As we resume public worship there are some rules we will need to follow:

  1. Please sanitise your hands when you arrive and wear a mask if at all possible. Keep a safe distance at all times.
  2. At this time, only the main body of the Church is available. No side chapels are accessible and the use of the toilet is not allowed.
  3. Please wait to be seated. Once in your space do not move till directed by the stewards.
  4. There will be no collection during mass. Please give your contribution as you leave the church or online.
  5. For communion, wait till the steward asks you to move. If you cannot queue, Fr Javier will come to you.
  6. Communion will be distributed only on the hand.
  7. At the end, wait to be ushered by the steward. If you are on the pulpit side, leave through the main aisle and the main door; if you are on the font side, leave by the side aisle and the side door.
  8. If you want to stay praying or light up a candle, wait in your place. Only light the candle when people have cleared the area.

All of us need to adjust and due to the restriction in numbers we might need to close the doors of the Church if we reach full capacity. The obligation to go to Mass on Sunday has lifted. A suggestion is to go to Mass during the week when the Churches are not as busy. On that topic the times of weekday masses is changing from this weekend. Mass on Monday will be at 7am (for time being due to my involvement with the Food Bank); mass on Tuesday and Wednesday will be at 9am and Mass on Friday at 12noon. There will not be a mass on Thursday. Masses on the weekend stay the same : Saturday 6pm; Sunday 9.30am; 11.30am an 6pm. I have also decided to move the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction to Friday at 11am. Confessions will be on Saturday at 5pm; Sundays between the morning masses and on call.

Having said that this coming week, masses will be as follows:

As we settle into the new routine much needs to be explored, about the celebrations of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion) for adults and children. More in the Weeks to come.

A final thought, Catholics in Mexico celebrate the feast of Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners on the Fourth of July. We entrust ourselves to her and pray that she will continue to guide us as we pick up our lives once again.

God bless,

Fr Javier
